Leaded Glass

Leaded glass combines timeless elegance with decorative style, using slender lead strips to create intricate patterns and motifs. It’s an ideal choice for adding character to both period restorations and contemporary properties.

At Barnsley Glass & Glazing, we specialise in high-quality leaded glass, providing beautifully crafted designs that enhance the appearance of windows, doors, and larger glazed areas.

Traditional Style with Modern Performance

Leaded glass offers the charm of traditional craftsmanship while benefiting from modern glazing technology. Whether you want to restore the character of a period home or add decorative detail to contemporary glazing, our leaded glass delivers a lasting, stylish solution.

How Leaded Glass is Made

Our leaded glass is created using premium self-adhesive lead strips, applied carefully to the surface of the glass to form classic or bespoke designs, such as diamonds, rectangles, and intricate decorative patterns. The process includes:

  1. Design Selection – Choose from traditional leaded patterns or customise your own design.

  2. Lead Application – High-quality lead strips are applied precisely to create the selected pattern.

  3. Patina Development – Over time, natural silver lead develops a subtle aged finish.

We stock natural silver lead for a classic look and antique-coated lead for an instant aged appearance. Lead profiles are available in 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm, with additional options on request.

Where Leaded Glass is Used

Leaded glass is versatile and adds elegance to a variety of applications, including:

  • Heritage & Period Homes – Restores traditional charm while improving window performance.

  • Modern Windows with Classic Detailing – Adds decorative character without compromising insulation.

  • Front Doors & Side Panels – Enhances entrances with stunning, eye-catching designs.

  • Conservatories & Feature Windows – Brings sophistication to larger glazed areas.

Important Considerations

While leaded glass can be applied to most glass types, a few key factors should be noted:

  • Textured Glass Compatibility – Certain highly textured obscure patterns may only allow lead application on one side. Contora, Pelerine, Sycamore, Chantilly, and Stipple patterns can be leaded on both sides.

  • Low-E Glass – Lead cannot be applied to low-e coated glass as the coating may be damaged.

  • Natural Oxidation – Silver lead will gradually develop a soft grey patina over time, depending on exposure and environment, which is a normal ageing process.

Timeless Style, Modern Quality

Every piece of leaded glass from Barnsley Glass & Glazing is crafted to the highest standards of quality and precision. Whether you choose a traditional diamond pattern or a bespoke design, our leaded glass enhances the elegance, character, and individuality of your property.
