Toughened Glass
Toughened glass is specially heat treated to provide enhanced strength and safety. When broken, it shatters into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards, making it the ideal choice for doors, shower screens, and other high-risk areas.
At Barnsley Glass & Glazing, we supply high-quality toughened safety glass designed to meet strict British Standards while delivering durability, reliability, and a clean modern finish.
Strength, Safety & Reliability
Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than standard float glass, making it suitable for applications where safety and impact resistance are essential. The glass is heated to high temperatures and rapidly cooled in a controlled process, which strengthens the surface and alters the way it reacts under stress.
In the unlikely event of breakage, the glass disintegrates into small, blunt-edged pieces, significantly reducing the risk of injury. This makes toughened glass a legal requirement in many domestic and commercial installations.
What Is Toughened Glass?
Also known as tempered glass, toughened glass is safety glass manufactured to withstand greater impact, pressure, and temperature changes than untreated glass. It is commonly required in areas where people may come into contact with the glass or where structural strength is needed.
Common Uses of Toughened Glass
Thanks to its strength and safety properties, toughened glass is widely used across residential and commercial projects, including:
Doors & Internal Screens – Essential for safety in homes, offices, and public spaces
Shower Screens & Bathrooms – Resistant to heat, moisture, and impact
Balustrades & Canopies – Suitable for load-bearing and protective installations
Furniture & Shelving – Durable glass for tables, shelves, and display units
Sealed Units – Often specified in double glazing where safety glass is required
